House history
City records date this 20-foot-wide, three-story house to about 1910, when much of this part of Williamsburg was taking shape.
By 1916, Sanborn mapped 427 as a three-story brick dwelling on Block 2745, between Withers and Jackson Streets. The house also appears in New York City’s 1940 tax photograph survey. Indoors, its curved wood handrail, turned balusters, paneled stair walls, and skylight carry that history into the present.
Its recorded construction date falls within a period of rapid North Brooklyn growth. Williamsburg’s factories, waterfront businesses, breweries, and printing trades drew working families, while the Williamsburg Bridge’s 1903 opening created a more direct connection to Manhattan and supported another wave of neighborhood development.
The surrounding streets have their own cultural history. Mae West is documented to have lived at 308 Humboldt Street in 1899 and 137 Conselyea Street in 1900. Today, Brooklyn Steel brings touring acts to nearby Frost Street, and Cozy Royale is a popular neighborhood restaurant across the street.
